Details

The initial step in making a raw or mother grating is the selection of the substrate material, usually glass or copper. Polish the substrate material to high flatness and coat it with a thin layer of aluminum film. It takes a long time to adjust the parallelism and equidistant lines of engraving, which may take several days to set and test before actual engraving. The engraving machine must be able to make the diamond blade fold back along a precise path after each engraving, and engrave the substrate according to a predetermined amount. The parallelism and displacement of the engraved lines must be precisely controlled.
A series of tests are required for engraving, including checking the efficiency of the grating, the shape of the engraved lines, and stray light. After each test, a small mechanical adjustment may be required. In order to optimize the contour of the engraved lines to achieve specific optical characteristics, repeated testing may take one week or longer. After thorough testing, the original grating can be engraved on a large substrate. The original grating is very expensive, so the grating can only be used to a limited extent before the development of replicated gratings.
